THE CULTURE

  • THE RAINBOW NATION

South Africa is often called the “Rainbow Nation” — and with good reason. It’s a country woven together from many cultures, languages, and traditions. Every region has its own flavor, and every encounter offers something heartfelt, surprising, or beautiful.

We’re so excited to be celebrating our love in a place that means so much to us and we’d love to introduce you to the spirit of South Africa.

  • HOSPITALITY & WARMTH

South Africans are known for their friendliness. Whether you’re in a boutique hotel, a vineyard, or a family-run café, you’ll likely be greeted with a big smile and a genuine “How are you?”. There’s a deep sense of warmth and human connection, even in simple exchanges.

Don’t be surprised if people take the time to chat with you or if a stranger offers to help with directions or a recommendation. It’s all part of the culture.

  • THE PEOPLE

Some of the largest cultural groups in South Africa include:

Black South Africans, (around 80% of the population), made up of various ethnic groups such as Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana.
Coloured South Africans, A culturally rich and historically complex community, primarily in the Western Cape. The term “Coloured” is unique to South Africa and refers to people of mixed racial heritage, often descending from Indigenous Khoisan, enslaved people from Indonesia, India and Madagascar, and Europeans.

White South Africans, including those of Afrikaner (Dutch/German/French Huguenot) and British descent.

Indian and Asian South Africans, many of whom are descendants of indentured laborers and traders brought to South Africa in the 19th century.

  • ART & MUSIC

South Africa has a vibrant creative soul, from colorful street art and handwoven crafts to jazz, gospel, and Afrobeat. Whether you’re walking through Bo-Kaap, visiting a vineyard gallery, or listening to music in a wine bar, you’ll feel the artistic energy.

Dance, drumming, singing, all are often spontaneous and heartfelt.

  • UBUNTU: “I am because we are”

One of the most beautiful cultural principles in South Africa is Ubuntu, a philosophy that centers on community, compassion, and shared humanity. It’s the idea that we exist through and with each other — a deeply held value in many African cultures.

In everyday life, it shows up as generosity, helpfulness, and care — and we hope you’ll feel that spirit during your visit.

  • RUGBY

Few things unite South Africans like rugby. The national team, the Springboks, are a source of immense pride and emotion, often seen as a symbol of unity, resilience, and national spirit. Rugby is more than a sport here; it’s a cultural heartbeat that transcends background and language.

Whether you’re in a local pub or walking past a TV during match day, you’ll feel the energy. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a game during your stay!
